    Story Behind the Song
Here's part one in a large-ish (or, more coloquially, 'bloated') suite based on the course of a person's life--god knows Pink Floyd has done it enough--and, confidentially, what I'm afraid of for myself.
Several themes in this section are reprised (not necessarily verbatim) throughout the other parts...adds a bit of continuity to the piece as a whole, I feel, and eases the burden of essentially coming up with 10 separate songs based around a common theme...I guess that's laziness in action for you.
In the way of nerdy technical notes, this is all in straight time (with the exception of the occasional measure of 2/4). Oddly enough, James' first drumming came in on the '3' beat after the acoustic guitar first comes in...firstly, this made the whole thing sound WAY more complex than the 2 chords that it is, and, due to a 2/4 measure of the solo acoustic, falls perfectly into place with the distorted guitars. It goes through a number of key changes as well--Dmin, Amaj, I think D phrygian dominant at the end, I don't really remember as of this writing...possibly others as well. I recorded the last riff (an odd progression of Dsus2-Dmaj9-Dadd4-D#maj7) by mic'ing my amplifier (as usual), and also the sound of the strings being strummed, which gives it that dirty acoustic/electric kind of sound. The guitar solo at the end, by the way, is played on two overdubbed guitars which play the initial Bmin9 arpeggio in unison, and then break off into rough (ever-so-slightly Gilmourian) countermelodies.
    "This means nothing to you."
