Story Behind the Song
With this song, I deliberately set out to write an opening track. It started out about a possessive girlfriend, but the evolved into something more general.
Lyrics
I wanna
fly away into the bright blue sky.
I wanna
spread the wings that take me up so high.
No harm in dreaming but a dream
can disappear without a trace,
so seize the moment while you can
because a dream can be replaced.
You wanna
tie me up, into captivity.
You wanna
hold me back, although eventually
I’ll break the ropes and cast aside
the chains while walking out the door,
and like the phoenix from the ash
I’ll rise up stronger than before.
A life cannot be bought and sold,
nor can a person be controlled.
On this, at least, we must agree.
Too much at stake to compromise,
perhaps, someday, you’ll realize.
If you really love me,
Set Me Free.
Don’t wanna
hear about my selfishness again.
Don’t wanna
hear you lie and say you are my friend.
Don’t try your guilt trips, ‘cause I’ve done
my best accommodating you.
Don’t get me wrong, I aim to please,
but, then, I’ve got my own life, too.
A life cannot be bought and sold,
nor can a person be controlled.
On this, at least, we must agree.
Too much at stake to compromise,
perhaps, someday, you’ll realize.
If you really love me,
Set Me Free.
We can’t go back and make
amends with yesterday,
so for tomorrow’s sake,
I’ll fight to get my way.
(instrumental of chorus)
So while I
have a chance, I’ll make my destiny.
And while I’m
not a sage, I know what’s right for me.
So many people tried to run
my life, but now control is mine.
At last, my moment in the sun
has come, and now’s my chance to shine.
A life cannot be bought and sold,
nor can a person be controlled.
On this, at least, we must agree.
Too much at stake to compromise,
perhaps, someday, you’ll realize.
If you really love me,
Set Me Free.
The locks and chains must be replaced
with understanding, trust, and grace.
It’s now or never, can’t you see?
Don’t let the past distort your view.
The future’s ours to start anew.
So show me you love me,
Set Me Free.
