Story Behind the Song
I remember watching the special on TV that John Denver did. It was his last work on TV before he died. It was a great show. We got to see him with part of his family. There was Zach and Jessie Belle. We got to see so many of the things that he loved. Like fishing, exploring and singing, watching wild horses...even the process of writing his last song Yellowstone, Coming Home. One of those moments when the show rang out for me particularly, John had rappelled down a cliff face to view a young eagle. And he looked straight into the camera, and that’s when this little moment took place, the seed if you will, for this little song. He said, "If I can come back, It'll be as an eagle." That comment started working on me a little bit and I thought of what it would be like to be an eagle, what it would be like if John we're an eagle. And I reflected on his home in the mountains around Aspen, Colorado, how he loved flying, how he traveled to the ocean shores in California and around the world. How his spirit still lives. John was so eloquent in his writing. In the song he wrote for his own father after he had died, we're the words, "though the singer is silent, there still is the truth of the song". Those words speak of the legacy we leave behind. And I would like to make a clarification of how I feel about legacy. I think the only thing we leave behind is the body. And that part of us that is most vital and ever present, is our spirit. And I think the term legacy is exactly the "what’s so" inside each one of us. For me it’s a natural thing to be aware of his gifts that I still enjoy in my life. And I think that he too is aware of us and the gifts that we gave him. For me John lives on.
Lyrics
Oh the wind, it blows so cold here
On this mountainside
But still it feels like paradise,
As I gaze across the sky
Cause heaven is in the sky
And the earth provides my home
And the wind helps me reach
The highest heights I've known
It's like I'm dreaming my way home
Well, I get this sense when I'm dreaming
Like somethings gone before
And I find myself a flying,
From these highlands to the shore
And I hear the distant songs, and
I'm singing right along
And the words tell of all the dreams
I've dreamed before
And I'm dreaming my way home
Oh the higher we fly together
The closer we'll be forever
(Instrumental)
You can see me in the morning,
At the breaking of the dawn
In the words you'll hear me singing
In the setting of the sun
And I can see you too
In your dreams I'll come to you
And our hearts will hold each other from now on
And I'm dreaming my way home
And I'm dreaming my way home
And I'm dreaming my way home
