Story Behind the Song
The band was messin' around one night at practice and the guitarist at that time started playing this twangy country lick. Next thing you know, we're all having fun while making up a new song. Even though it's origins were out of goofiness, it became one of our most requested songs, ever, after being made famous at the "Gospel Barn" in McKinney, Texas. It talks about going home to Heaven, but Old Number Nine is actually a cloud. Cloud 9.
Lyrics
chorus:
I'm on my way to heaven, I'm leaving on cloud 9 (repeat)
I can't be late, won't hesitate, or I might get left behind
verse 1
Oh, All aboard, get your tickets over here
Get down on your knees for the time is drawing near
You can't get to heaven if the Lord ain't in control
You're gonna miss your ride when that train begins to roll....
Verse 2
Well, Mister Conductor, blow that whistle loud!
My bags are packed and ready and I'm looking for that cloud
I've worked for the Lord, and it's time for my vacation
Take me on to Glory for that wedding celebration...
bridge:
We're moving on down the track, won't be looking back...moving on down the track, won't be looking back...(repeat)
Can't be late, we won't hesitate, or we might get left behind!
