Two harp lines over the "Stormy Monday" chord progression. |

Story Behind the Song
Stormy Sea II develops a riff from J.J.Milteau over a classic "Stormy Monday" blues progression. The two harp lines were developed over many days in an unusual way: switching harps between verses. One line starts on a low (tenor) C Hohner 365 harp, and alternates between it and a standard major diatonic C harp tuning every verse. For example, the first verse is a low harp range, the next verse a normal harp range, back to low, back to high, and finishing on the low harp. The other line does the inverse--that is, it starts on the normal major diatonic tuning, switches to the low pitch tuning, back to normal, to low, finishing on the normal pitched C harp.
The result is a song with 2 harp lines, one low and one high, even though the lines were not played that way. This way, each pitch range harp has the opportunity to lead the music sometimes, and follow the other harp at other times.
The lead line starts on the low end of the normal harp, and as the verses unfold the middle and finally the top end of the harp come to dominate.
There are some unusual harp techniques used in this song, so if you're a harp player, give a careful listen to the details.
