Story Behind the Song
The revolutionary hero John Paul Jones has just been knighted a Chevalier by King Louis 16th of France. He feels the weight of history upon him, but is also aware of how far he has come from his childhood as a gardener's son in Scotland. He feels torn between the shouts of the common people outside the palace, and the pomp and circumstance of the palace and its occupants. During this number Jones is presented with a choice, and the choice he makes is revealed at the end of the song.
The orchestral and choral components were recorded in a concert hall in 4 takes. The solo vocals were added in the studio over three separate sessions.
Lyrics
NICOLSON & ARISTOCRATS:
Who’d have thought a gardener’s boy would come this far?
FRANKLIN:
Who’d believe that we’d be standing where we are?
JONES:
Now I’ve arrived, I can feel I’m alive
And no-one’s out of reach and nothing’s safe
No song is ever sung
Till the game is won
And war is over
NICOLSON & ARISTOCRATS:
Can you hear the English guns are silent now?
FRANKLIN:
Sailors tell their stories to the oceans now
JONES & FRANKLIN:
Carry a flame for the right we proclaim
Our banner ever bold shall never fail
The sons who rose and fought and fell
At Saratoga
JONES:
Freedom arise!
Glistening prize!
Heroes’ story
Peoples’ glory
Nations awake
Never forsake
Liberté, Humanité
NICOLSON & ARISTOCRATS:
Can you hear the people in their shouts empower
NICOLSON:
The hero of the moment in his finest hour
And how
Every troubled soul
Every fading heart
Finds in him a part of a golden dawn
Calling
JONES, FRANKLIN AND CROWD:
Freedom arise!
Brightening skies
Tyrants’ thunder
Rent asunder
Nations awake
Never forsake
Liberté, fraternité, égalité!
FRANKLIN & CROWD SING:
Freedom arise!
Tyrrany lies
Torn and chastened
Peace has hastened
Nations awake
Never forsake
Liberté, humanité, fraternité, égalité
JONES: (to NICOLSON, sings)
Can it be true?
Can it be the world that I knew
Is ending in you
NICOLSON:
Let it be so
Let it be that all I require, all I desire
BOTH:
All I need is in my heart
With you
