Story Behind the Song
This number appears towards the end of Act II of the musical. The American War of Independence has been won, and John Paul Jones' place in history is assured. However, while his ambition drives him onwards to greater glories, his friend Ben Franklin sees danger in this. Meanwhile Countess Nicolson, who is in love with Jones, is tormented by his apparent lack of feeling towards her.
The orchestral components of the this recording were recorded live in a concert hall in two takes. The vocal parts were recorded separately in the studio over three separate sessions.
Lyrics
FRANKLIN:
It’s a joy to have you
Close at hand once more old friend
JONES:
It warms my heart to be
In dear old Paris once again
Dear Doctor Franklin
Time lies heavy on the hands
Of this once feted fighting man
FRANKLIN:
A fighting man no more, I plead
The hour of struggle now is past
Rest from your labours, pay me heed
The peace we yearned for
Peace we dreamed of
Now at last is ours!
JONES:
I shall not be tied
I cannot be free
Till I know the glory
Of a fleet ensign which bears my name
Everything to win
All my hopes to lose
Should I retire to count the cost
Or celebrate the life I choose?
FRANKLIN:
Peace is ours!
The prize is won!
Free to build a new world
We shall raise it higher with each new day
Nothing left to win
Everything to lose
Grasp the hour that's now at hand
Rejoice in our victorious cruise
JONES:
How can my courage be at peace
Ignored by those whose cause I serve...
FRANKLIN: (speaks) Hardly ignored!
JONES: Ignored, like jetsam on the rocks
I gave my all to your crusade!
FRANKLIN:
Will the fighting never end for you?
NICOLSON:
Heartless, shining blade
Ungrateful, hateful made
Valiant warrior, tend my plea
I beg, no more a stranger be
Love which once was ours
Return, enraptured hours
Dispel all vicious thoughts
That your cruel heart could cease to beat for me
JONES:
The song is never sung
Until the game is won!
How could I be true to thee
When my true love's the raging sea?
I will not be tied
I cannot be free
While my honour is not whole
Love's temples hold no grace for me
NICOLSON:
Return to me in heaven's name!
JONES:
Inside the tempest rages on.
