Story Behind the Song
This song is mid-way through the second act of the musical, John Paul Jones. The American revolutionary hero has just departed France for the USA, and left Countess Nicolson (the female lead) behind on the quayside to ponder lost love. The song underwent many changes during rehearsals until the final version was arrived at.
For this recording, the orchestral backing was recorded live in two takes in a concert hall. The vocal was recorded separately over one evening.
Lyrics
In my heart, the sweet falling rain
In my arms, a vision strong and plain
A maiden fair
And the sweet Commodore
An Eden tame, from a stream to a shore
The wandering star will shine
A light on a scene so fine
To have and to hold
As summer grows old
A pride in his heart
A bride on his arm
A cheer to his sorrow deep
They gather and sow and reap
The passions and cares
Only lovers can share
Slowly she runs
A hand through his hair
He sees himself in their eyes
And turns as he breaks and cries
From father to son
A story begun
A people becoming free
A dream so near and yet so far
The more we dream the less we are, it seems
A poet’s theme
Believing it’s meant to be
Blessèd the weak and strong
The woman who loved too long
Still reaching out but it was gone, I know
The afterglow
If only desire
The passion, the fire
Were only a song to me
only a song to me
