Story Behind the Song
This song was written and recorded in Toronto. Looking at Toronto's trees bare of leaves during the winter months inspired "Gli alberi." The lyrics from the homonymous poem translate the fascination with the winter trees and their enigmatic beauty. It took one entire week to write and record the song. I made about fifteen takes before being happy with it.
Lyrics
Here is the homonymous poem and lyrics of the song (in both Italian and English):
Gli alberi
Grandiosi senza avere nulla di moderno
pacate voci nude dell'inverno,
figure smorte dell'aria annusano l'umore
in attesa di rivestire lo svanito splendore,
a guardarli irretiscono nel profondo
fedeli compagni dell'intero mondo,
senza mai tradire il pensiero
di chi li coltiva sul proprio sentiero…
sempre belli, perché? ci chiediamo io e te
senza mai scoprire, l'intimo perché:
gli alberi, spogli di foglie,
catturano lo sguardo di te, di me, di noi
di te, di me, di noi…
(The Trees)
Majestic without being modish
winter's quiet and bare voices,
waning shapes they smell the air's humour
awaiting to recover their vanished splendour,
if you stare at them they utterly enmesh you
trustworthy friends of the entire world,
never betraying the thoughts
of those who cultivate them along their paths…
always beautiful, why? you and I wonder
never finding out, the intimate reason:
the trees, bare of leaves,
capture yours, mine, our attention
yours, mine, ours…
