Story Behind the Song
Actually this was a fantasy written in the early 1980s about hopes this would happen with a young lady I knew at the time. (It didn't). As with most of my songs, it was probably written in a day or two, although the refining probably too several years and did not take final form until it was chorded in 2000 and entered into my computer composition Program, "Harmony" in 2001.
Lyrics
Friends And Lovers
By James R. Hoye
(c) 1982
We didn't see it for the longest time.
We had always just been friends.
I don't know how we could have been so blind.
I doubt we'll ever be again.
She was always fun to be with.
She was someone nice to know.
I was always there to lean on,
Whenever she was feeling low.
She was always in the social whirl,
And me....I seemed to have my share of girls.
'Though we had fun with one another,
We always sought romance in others.
What a pleasure to discover....
That old friends can be new lovers.
What a pleasure to discover,
That old friends can be no lovers,
And I have a hunch we'll find....
It's gonna last a long long time.
She was just a ready partner,
When I felt the mood to dance,
I was her armor and protection,
Whenever wolves tried to advance.
Never thought romance would raise its head.
There was no hint in any thing we said.
'Though we shared with one another,
It was like sister and like brother.
What a pleasure to discover....
That old friends can be new lovers.....
Lovers.....
Lovers.
