Story Behind the Song
"Hovercraft" underwent several overhauls before finally landing in the format heard here. The song is ultimately an expression of affection toward the author's lover, but also touches on kindergarten, soundmen, surfing, and the mysterious "Chez Situation." The Hovercraft itself stands as a status symbol attainable only by such obtuse rockers as U2, Aerosmith, and of course Rod Stewart.
Lyrics
Say good morning to Miss Owens
Other children are telling what they're showing
Put your coat down on the table
Lets you know when you are feeling able
Give a mellow hello
Wake the soundman, take him surfing
While the children laugh behind the curtain
I can feel you in your corset
I can see you from your bedroom closet
Once I've got my fortune in the bank I'll buy you a hovercraft
My car has no petrol in the tank, I'll ride your hovercraft
She says:
I can't make it by myself
I could use a little help
Say good morning to Miss Owens
All the children play in Chez Situation
Put your coat down on the table
Lets you know when you are feeling able
You lifted the ocean when I sank, you are my hovercraft
