A new translation and remix of a very ancient
hymn "Let all mortal flesh keep silence",
originally from the liturgy of St James. | MP3.com CD: Hymns for Visions - buy it!
Credits: French traditional, remixed by Abbess |
Story Behind the Song
I've always loved the tune Picardy, and the
mysterious images it evokes for me. I've
tried to remix it a few times, but I've now
created a mix I'm finally happy with. I loved the sense of
the words too, the images of hovvering ranks
of angels and the sweet smell of incense, but
I was never totally happy with the way they
were expressed in the usual translation. So
I created my own (loose!) translation - trying
tokeep the sense of mystery and trancendence,
but blended with the poetry and unity of new
lyrics.
Lyrics
O my people still your thinking
And with adoration stand!
Point your thoughts to things of Heaven
For with blessings in His hand
Christ has come to Earth to meet us.
Our devotion to demand.
Heaven's king was born of Mary
Planting footsteps in our world.
God on High a touchable being
With a human body and blood
He will feed His hungry people
With Himself He'll nurture us.
Ranks of all the angels of Heaven
Spread their wings to line His way
For the light of light is returning
From the realms of endless day.
That all evil, pain and death may die
As the darkness clears away.
At His feet the six winged seraphs,
Angel cherubim from on high,
Bow before His dazzling presence.
As with ceaseless voice they cry
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Alleluia God most high.
