Story Behind the Song
Brad - I wrote the music for this one afternoon when I was home alone. I had been listening to Bryndle (Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman, Kenny Edwards, Andrew Gold) a lot, and started to write something along those lines. But the song that emerged sounded nothing like Bryndle. It's a really light pop type tune - the major seventh pop kind of thing. It's sort of a straight ahead, non-Latin, yet Sergio Mendes kind of pop song. My favorite parts of the music structure are the chords and melody of the bridge, and that bass lick during the guitar solo. I don't know where that came from. Anna's brother Bruce did a really fine job on the vocal double during the bridge. Thanks, Bruce.
This was the second song that Anna and I wrote together. I remember we were really excited when we finished writing this song. We were starting to realize that we really could write songs together, even simple pop songs. I think that those are actually harder to write than the complex jazz, R&B, and rock songs that I have done in the past, because you have to hold back so much. This transition has been a little odd for me, because historically I have been more of a high-energy gunslinger Jeff Beck kind of guitar player.
I knew we were on to something when we finished this song, because my daughter Alissa walked around the house for weeks singing it.
Anna - This song was the second song that we wrote together. Light In Your Eyes is really special because it was the first song where I wrote lyrics to composed music. In our first collaboration, "Let's Keep On", I had written the lyrics in the form of a poem first, and asked Brad to put them to music. Light In Your Eyes was my first lyrical challenge. Determined to meet that challenge, I dusted off an old manila envelope full of poems, writings, and half-finished songs. I pulled out an old song that I wrote when I was 17 years old, entitled "How I Feel". I really loved Brad's working title, so I incorporated the line "Light In Your Eyes" into the chorus, using the theme of "How I Feel" throughout the verses. It all came together so well, it seemed like it was meant to be. There's something to be said for saving bits and pieces of one's past. Brad's talent for writing outstanding music brought about a wonderful recording experience, one that I was able to share with my brother, Bruce, who also sings on this cut. I love ya, Bro.

I want to tell you what I feel for you
But I can't get the words right
This is the moment that calls for truth
I'm looking for the light in your eyes
You don't know what I've been goin' thru
Just to get the nerve up to say "I love you"
Don't say goodnight just yet, please don't go
This time I'm goin' to let you know
And I'm Prayin' for the light in your eyes
I hope that you won't patronize me
This may come as a big surprise
Could this love turn into a mutual thing?
I'm lookin' for the light in your eyes
You're the one that I've been dreamin' of all this time
When you walked into my life I hoped you'd be mine
Don't say goodnight just yet, please don't go
This time I'm goin' to let you know
And I'm Prayin' for the light in your eyes
Share your love with me
Hold on tight
Maybe this could be right
My heart is waiting for you
Don't say goodnight just yet, please don't go
This time I'm goin' to let you know
And I'm Prayin' for the light in your eyes
I saw the light in your eyes
