Story Behind the Song
Some nights when it was clear and quiet and the cold held close and dense to the black night earth the sound of the WN that ran over in Ironwood could be heard:--the bullhorn before crossing Erikson Road gate, could he hear the bells ringing there too? sometimes he swore he could; the clicking clacking rumbles steel wheel on iron bar thud against wooden tie reverberating through the patchwork gray dormant wood, resonating against the poorly drained frozen landscape, hissing in scatters of limb and twig, oak, cedar, prickly ash, stochastic trellis pale in the moon and starlights; ice black silent firmament, crystal shining repeats. To the south, below the sky on the horizon, a yellow glow, terrestrial; the city, indifferent.
