Story Behind the Song
I have always admired those who have the conviction to pursue their passion no matter what it takes - even in the face of adversity. That being said, after listening to a Jewel CD one evening, I picked up my guitar and began playing the opening riff. It stuck and the words just started pouring out. So, the song pretty much wrote itself. I guess you could say I lightly based the story on the life of Jewel, when she was first starting out as a singer/songwriter. However, I do emphasize "lightly"...since I was inspired by all the brilliant artists who have faced challenges while pursuing their dream. I must admit, that on some level it is slightly autobiographical. But, let's just keep that our little secret - okay?
Lyrics
SOCRATES DAUGHTER
(Dana Meredith)
She stands on the corner waiting for her ship to come in
She doesn't know what that means
But, she's comfortable in her own skin
Faceless people pass by and they don't understand
She's a poet inside
Despite dirty fingernails and hands
I ask her, "What's your name?"
And she says, "Honey, it's all the same."
I'm Socrates' Daughter
Socrates' Daughter, that's me
No bed to sleep in at night; she's weathered every storm
Although there's holes in her clothes
Her words and her music keep her warm
And with a tear in her eye she knows she will survive
When our collective wounds ignore her battle cries
I ask her "What's your name?"
She says, "Honey, it's all the same.
What's it matter anyway? I put society to shame.
But, you can call me, Socrates' Daughter
Socrates' Daughter, that's me
Socrates' Daughter
Socrates' Daughter, that's me
Socrates' Daughter (oh yeah)
Socrate's Daughter, that's me
Socrates' Daughter
Socrates' Daughter
Socrates' Daughter
