Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song shortly after attending my first medicine ceremony. What a wonderful experience of introspection and love for all of Father's creations I found that day. Flaming Eagle was the medicine man conducting the ceremony. His noble image and the way he carried his position is emblazoned in my memory. I wrote of him specifically, and where each verse speaks of "the Indians", it is meant to speak of all American tribes. I dedicate this song to all Native American Indians. Their rich culture and even their languages are in danger of extinction due to the ignorance, persecutions, and prejudices of the overbearing white men in this "land of the free". How ironic that we can take so much away from a people. Even a whole civilization, and then claim a motto such as that. (I understand the "home of the BRAVE" part though.) Know this my friends, that "The first shall be last, and the last shall be first." You are remembered, and you're time of favor in this country and the world is again coming. May you handle your times of trust and plenty in a good way. I pledge to give my voice, where I can, to educate and to remember. Peace, Roy.
Lyrics
We' oginali
Gasaqualv
O Ko'hiu'sv
Uha tohido
Oklevueha, Medicine Man
Thanks the fire
The water and land
And the wind...
For (on behalf of) these women and men
Who have come
To be healed
By the Indians
He says a prayer
For the circle they're in
He shares the cup
And the healing begins
The Spirit talks
We are listening in
To the truth and the faith
Of the Indians
Some men doubt
In the gift which he shares
It's anything (white man excuses)
From the length of his hair
To the medicine
Or the getting out there
They just ignore
All the ways of the Indians
And some embrace
And they take it all in
The Greatest One
Has provided for them
The early ways
Have been handed on down
And they live in the lives
Of the Indians
Translation of the Cherokee language at the songs beginning:
Dear Friends, May the circle we're in this day bring good peace to our body's, minds and spirits. Ha Ho (Amen)
