    Story Behind the Song
"Tom" was written and first performed in 1990, back before voyeurs had the internet to satisfy their purient interests and had to actually go door to door. There was something lame about the earlier version, so the song was virtually rewritten for the "Clear" sessions. It was the last song demoed for the album and went together pretty quickly.

    Lyrics
    I drive by your house
Stare in from the darkness and write in my Big Chief tablet
I look to the street and the number I'll copy
But in my excitement the writing is sloppy
You dance at the window but I know that you're stalling
The porch lights are blazing and the neighbors are calling
They call me Tom, it's just the way that I live
They call me Tom, and I know where you live
The radio plays cryptic songs in the silence
They warn me of voodoo and push me to violence
My goggles are on but the windows are steamy
The mirrors are taped so the devil can't see me
The meek will inherit the earth and her sights
But strong ones will keep the mineral rights
They call me Tom, it's just the way that I live
They call me Tom, and I know where you live
There's no privacy when you're with me
I can't see a thing when the curtains are drawn
The taillights are fading, It's clear that he's gone
The traffic congeals but still I'm alone
The engine is droning and so is my cell phone
The moment is right I'm leaving the car
A bush by the window is not very far
Dialing the number (unlisted my ass) your hand reaches out
    Pick up
