Story Behind the Song
The song was written on April 8, 1994, the day I learned that Kurt Cobain had killed himself. He was the first performer from my generation to be lost, and I thought of the song "American Pie", about the original "day the music died". For many people, on the day Kurt left, "The Music Died Again"
Lyrics
"A long, long time ago..."
They handed you the crown
and tried to make you king
But you wouldn't take the throne
you couldn't even sing
Leader of the scene
the needle in the air
I bet you could shoot a lot
if you could get up there
Were they calling out to you?
Why couldn't you just see it through?
Before the next song could begin,
I heard the music die again
A rose tried to warn you
about your evil ways
You heard the cliche "when in Rome"?
Your life became a maze
No matter what the papers say
you weren't the latest fad
You just became a legend
you just became a Dad
Were they calling out to you?
Why couldn't you just see it through?
Before the next song could begin,
I heard the music die again
Just when you found a smile
you'd throw it in the fire
Try now, you could only lose
Your life became a pyre
You had a foxy lady
she took a little piece
of your heart shaped box
The magic age you reached
Were they calling out to you?
Why couldn't you just see it through?
Before the next song could begin,
I heard the music die again
