Story Behind the Song
I used to play a solo acoustic set in Dallas every Wednesday night. On one particular night, I went to the bar's owner to discuss the possibilty of booking my band 'Moneyshot' for a Saturday night show. Expecting a 'yes' answer, perhaps I came across a bit cocky... the bar was a complete shithole that was always empty. He was extremely drunk, turned to me... then turned 'on' me. He basically told me off and lectured me like a child for an hour. The things he said were unexpected, but some of them actually stuck and were considered while writing many of these songs.
What does this have to do with "Queen"? Well I wanted to write about my experience of moving to New York City. One of the things that he lectured was "stop singing about me, start singing about 'we'... sing about something someone else can relate to".
I thought this through, and decided to make the song about a girl who leaves N.O. for fame and fortune as a bigtime NYC model. After further review of the song, I decided it should be about a drag queen who is sick of her life in New Orleans, so she moves to take it out on unsuspecting men in the Big Apple. If you are wondering... this song is purely fictional, however it touches the drag queen inside us all.
(sidebar... try singing Paul Simon's 'Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard' to it)
Lyrics
Nineteen eighty-seven
Prytania Street and 7th
She sucked it up but wouldn't kiss him
Eleven more years is just matter of time
Now she's locked inside the closet again
But can you see the river
Flowing through her mirror
Degraded on the bathroom walls
Sooner or later time is coming to save her
Then she's gonna teach 'em to crawl
She took off to find her runway up and down Park Avenue
But brought her tainted heart along the way
Can you photograph the reckless mind of a Mississippi Queen?
Thinkin' New York City ain't far from New Orleans
Inside the city
She'll sacrifice the crimes of forsaken southern souls
Inside the city
She'll taste the grease from the one night stands
Ain't she pretty?
You'll find she'll blow your mind until she takes off her blue jeans
Cause New York City is far from New Orleans
Nineteen ninety-seven
11th street and 7th
She sucked it up, but wouldn't miss him
Another seven years is just a matter of mind
Now she's clearing out the closet again
But can't you feel her quiver
Flowing through the shivers
Bangin' on the bedroom walls
Time ain't ever gonna let you forget her
So get down on your knees and crawl
She took off to find her runway up and down Park Avenue
She'll rip your heart in half like yesterday
Can you photograph the reckless mind of a Mississippi Queen?
Thinkin' New York City ain't far from New Orleans
Inside the city
She'll sacrifice the crimes of forsaken southern souls
Inside the city
She'll taste the grease from the one night stands
Ain't it shitty?
Sometimes your kind enough to fall victim to her scheme
Takin' New York City for a ride to New Orleans
Takin' New York City for a ride to New Orleans
Now New York City ain't far from New Orleans
