    Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by Bill Bryson's truly excellent book Made In America, specifically page 173. It's about the collision of heedless criminals and the traveling family. As I wrote and recorded it late at night, a very scary thunderstorm began. Frankly, I was creeped out by the whole thing. I don't really know what horrorcore is, but this seems like a horror story to me.

    Lyrics
(This part will be cut. I don't want to start with the riff.)

"This is really all you brought in to show me?" The motel court second room from the left. The big briefcase was open. The little briefcase was still locked. Two men, two guns, two different accents. One knife in one ankle holster. And that turned out to be the difference.

And the weird thing was the rain
Where it fell and when it came
He never knew how lost he was
(and the weird thing was the rain)
Until something happened that never does
(and the weird thing was the rain)
    The rain
I meant to talk about the rain.

"Higher, higher!" and he laughs again until it hurts. From The Shadow right through Shall We Dance. No connection to the needle or to the hammer of the pistol until they both fire at once, taking their chances. And that little sound the CD player makes, that little grinding sound that tells you that the music's over for now or at least for a while or whatever. Seems to John to be a sound that's saying, "Get out the knife. The fun is only just beginning. The fun is really only just getting started.

And the weird thing was the rain
Where it fell and when it came
Behind the room where they didn't mow
Before the woods where the weed would grow
And only after the pieces fell
Through the concrete cracks leadin' straight to hell
He never knew how lost he was
(and the weird thing was the rain)
Until something happened that never does
(and the weird thing was the rain)
    The rain
I meant to talk about the rain.

    Something happened that never does
(and the weird thing was the rain)
The rain that I once wished I was
(and the weird thing was the rain)

So the couple that is really, really just dog tired from a long, hard day of driving are the first ones to notice the fleshy mess out back. And a throat that's tired from yelling at the kids all day reaches deep down (cough) deep down inside, reaches deep down inside to find there's one or two great screams left in there, scraping the bottom of the barrel and. Wasn't I just supposed to check in and take my shoes off and read a book about the origins of words? That's what I'd been looking forward to as mile after mile of highway rolled, rolled by, mile after mile of highway rolled by...shit. I really didn't want to do this tonight.

And the weird thing was the rain
Where it fell and when it came
Behind the room where they didn't mow
Before the woods where the weed would grow
And only after the pieces fell
Through the concrete cracks goin' straight to hell
Never knew how lost I was
(and the weird thing was the rain)
Until something happened that never does
(and the weird thing was the rain)
    Something happened that never does
(and the weird thing was the rain)
Baby, something happened that never does
(and the weird thing was the rain)
    The rain
I meant to talk about the rain.
