Story Behind the Song
This song began life in front of the tv as I was lounging around doing nothing of any use. I wrote one verse and left it alone. I returned to the song later in a far darker mood. My favourite artists have always been those who can create an atmosphere with their songs, and that's what I've tried to do here.
This was the first song I'd recorded in 6 months, and it probably marks a new direction. Very difficult to record from a vocal point of view, and less straight-forward than anything I'd recorded previously.
Lyrics
It's not a pawn that you can take,
It's not a goal that you can raise your arm and claim,
But every time you say goodbye,
There's sure a sense of victory in your eye.
It's not a war that you can wage,
And it ain't dynamite it won't blow us all away,
But every time you close the door,
My soul cries surrender and my body hits the floor.
It's not a secret you can tell,
It's not a one way ticket or a fast-track road to hell,
But every time you try the truth,
I hear the devil and he blames his fate on you.
Chorus:
You've got me running all the time,
You've got me running all the time,
You've got me running all the time.
It's not a role that you can play,
You're not the Holy Ghost coming down to test my fate.
It's not a hope that you can hide,
It's not the thought you share that you know you should have kept inside.
It's not the friend you couldn't help,
And it's not the tip you gave 'cause you kept the change as well.
Chorus:
You've got me running all the time,
You've got me running all the time,
You've got me running all the time.
It's not a name you can't recall,
It ain't Jesus Christ coming back to save us all,
It's just a chance you didn't take.
