Sit quietly with Dystopia in 'The Forest', as the music flows and entwines around the beguiling spoken word vocals of Liz Maw. Shinya's remix spins out on uncluttered dreamlike washes broken by stabs of poetry and a soft tabla rhythm, while the sweet song of New Zealand native birds fills the air.
CD: the wisdom of insecurity   Label: monkey records
Credits: words by liz maw, keyboards by monkey, arranged and produced by shinya

    Story Behind the Song
This song was originally a piece of poetry by Liz Maw.

She wrote it while walking around the city
    in the rain.
In a city the biggest things around you are manmade. Not so, the weather. It can connect you with the wider environment.
The memory of the rain falling reminded Liz of a rainforest and this memory made her glad.
So she welcomed the rain and was once again surrounded by the trees and birdsong and the sound of running water.

When Shinya and monkey play 'The Forest', they imagine they are there with her too.

    Lyrics
    back in the forest
    i ask nature -
    why green

because that's what colour it is
    was the answer

    Tui's simple song sounds green
    wherever you are Tui

and still the forest isn't quiet

    moving
    sophisticated
    greenland

I can't hear noise in here
'noise' was invented outside the forest world
where walls are built between phenomena

    that's - the sound
    that's - the object
    that's - the feeling

this is the tragedy or sacrifice of focus
we needed to define this system's parts
always this futile quest for understanding

    our being understands it

it just does - green and why the colour wasn't chosen

but on go the fantasies of alternatives

    keep coming 'bad' weather
    be a rain city
    instead of a rain forest

    it'll do
    this fancy valley
