1. Primal Remembrance
The music for this piece is one of the most ancient and primal pieces of traditional Zen shakuhachi music: “Kyorei”. According to one account, “Kyorei” is about the Zen student following the sound of his spiritual Master ringing a bell.
The thunder in this piece is like the bell, and is meant to also represent the sound of the spiritual Master (or Guru). In the ancient Upanishads of India, thunder is traditionally said to be the most primal vibration manifested in the conditional realm, and the sound of thunder is given the name “Da”.
Thus, this piece, combining “Kyorei” and thunder, is meant to describe the manifestation of the Adi (Primal) Guru, Adi Da, in this conditional world (signaled by the sound of thunder), and the devotee’s relationship to That One.
Leroy Stilwell, 2.4 shakuhachi; natural sounds recorded on Naitauba Island, Fiji.
