Story Behind the Song
It is the story of a death of a gambler's girfriend caused by the plague. The lyrics are a fusion of various versions, plus some custom arrangement.
Lyrics
Refrain: Just tell 'em I got the Gambler's blues.
Verse 1: It was down at old Joe's barroom, on the corner by the square. The drinks were served as usual and the usual crowd was there.
Verse 2: On my left stood big Joe MacKennedy, his eyes were bloodshot red. He looked at the gang around him and these were the words he said.
Chorus: Let her go, let her go, God bless her. Where ever she may be, you may seach the wide world over and never find a Gamblin' fool like me.
Verse 3: I went down to the St. James Infirmary, I saw my sweetheart there, she was stretched out on a long, white table. So sweet, so cold and so fair.
Verse 4: 17 Coal-black horses, hitched to a rubber tired hack, 7 girls a- goin' to the graveyard and only 6 of 'em comin' back.
Repeat Chorus:
Verse 5: And when I die please bury me in my high-top Stetson hat, put a $20 gold piece on my watch chain so the Lord will know I died standin' pat.
Verse 6: I want 6 crap shooter's for my pall bearer's, a chorus girl to sing me a song. Put a jazz band on my hearse wagon to raise hell as we roll along.
Verse 7: And now that you've heard my story, I'll take another shot o' booze. If anyone should happen to ask ya', just tell 'um I got the gambler's blues.
Repeat Refrain:
