Story Behind the Song
I love the feeling of freedom that comes with cruising on the open road on a trip across the USA. I daydream often about the free feeling of a cruising vacation, getting away from the "cubicle" and never coming back. I also think this is the only song that I know of that makes a references to "Wall Drug" (wink).
The song was recorded digitally at my studio using Mac G3s and MOTU hardware. I lost count of all the takes for all the different instruments.
All the instruments: guitars, drums, Hammond B3 and vocals were all done by me. I do not currently play in a band and so I create all the tracks myself the way that I hear them in my head.
Lyrics
Cruzin' on the Open Road
recorded & produced by Daniel Underhill
Well it's Friday afternoon,
and I'm feeling quite immune,
to the hassles of the day,
think it's time to get away...
Got my paycheck in my hand,
new horizons to expand,
just the pavement up ahead,
as I'm laying down my tread,
I'm just looking for myself,
Cruzin' on the open road.
Feel the rising of degrees,
as my mind begins to ease,
the horizon is my friend,
helps me heal and to transcend,
the problems of the day
yes it is the only way,
the tao of the road,
can be my passion play,
I'm just trying to clear my mind,
Cruzin' on the open road
I pass the family van and it's wearing that familiar plug,
stuck onto its back is the phrase, "where the hell is Wall Drug?"
I smile as I go by 'cause I know that deep down inside,
that the faze behind the wheel would rather just get outside,
on my ride, leave it all, far behind, ya ya
Well it's Sunday afternoon,
and it's ended all too soon,
gotta head by the grind,
as if I really don't mind,
giving my freedom away,
what else can I say,
this place has been a crutch,
and they won't miss me that much,
I just gotta take a break,
Cruzin' on the open road....
I just gotta get away,
Cruzin' on the open road...
I'm just looking for myself,
I'm just trying to clear my mind,
I just gotta get away, I'm just cruzin' on the open road
