Acoustic guitar, four part harmony, and Mike Lemmler's lush string and orchestral arrangement characterize this song about the perils of surviving in the modern world. It's probably the best song this band has done so far. Hit the song title to check out the lyrics too.

    Story Behind the Song
I originally wrote the song in the late 80s with keyboards in a sort of a Joe Jackson type of arrangement with drums and some percussion. Our group for a long time had no drummer, and had changed focus to more acoustic oriented material, so I adapted the song and added the harmonies. We did my arrangment in the studio and were happy with it. I was talking to Mike who asked if he could play with a string arrangement. I said sure, no problem. A few days later he sent me an mp3 by email of what came out. It completely floored me. I loved it, and it now has given the song a new more dramtic character without robbing it of the old pared down arrangement. As you can kinda tell, we like this one a lot.

    Running Out of Steam

    Words and Music: Mark Carson

    There's a message, I've been searching
    Simply waiting, never learning
I am older, but it has not made a difference

Feel the hustle of the daylight
Fit the muzzle 'till your shut tight Inconsistent with what we have caught on inference

To another speed where the eyes take heed
And the senses, the senses leave their master
And the patience is too latent
Can we ever, can we ever move much faster

Now I'm running out of steam
    Foot caught in the wheel
    Now it's stopped turning
    I'm running out of hope
    Only want to know
    If you're still yearning
To give this tortured life a chance

I can feel the matter rusting
And the light reduced to trust
It is colder, but I feel the heat still burning
Run the treadmill, feet unstable Like I'm falling from the cradle
I am naked, no defenses to reality

Expectations from the jungle Make this proud boy manly humble
    They pass sentence with resentment
But their terms Could cause a soul to stumble

Now I'm running out of steam.....
