Story Behind the Song
I opened a magazine in a waiting room - on facing pages were pictures of the late Princess Diana and African famine victims. Next time I picked up the guitar out came the riff and the words flowed:
I saw the pictures, in a magazine
Opposite the princess, taking dinner with the movie queen....
Ben wrote the lyrics for the second verse and it was one of those songs that just came naturally.
Lyrics
I saw the pictures, in a magazine
Opposite the princess, taking dinner with the movie queen
And all the faces, you had to see them all
Mummy crying, baby dying, daddy took away, Saturday - gonna teach him, Gonna pin him to that wall
I’m just a simple boy
From a simple town
Trying to spread the message
I’m trying to get the word around
That it’s a sad world
Such a sad, sad world
I know you’ve seen it, so many times
Always on the T.V., amongst the sex, the drugs and the crimes
Skin like leather, it’s getting numb everyday
Famine victim, getting worn thin, it is no surprise, see the flies in his eyes
He gotta wipe them off his face
I’m just a simple boy
From a simple town
I’m trying to spread that message
I’m trying to get the word around
Yeah that it’s a sad world
It’s such a sad, sad world
It’s a going bad, getting sad, get yourself up off your arse
(Sad, sad) world
(Solo)
Sad world
It’s a sad, sad world
Such a sad world
It’s such a sad, sad world
Yeah it’s a sad world
It’s such a sad, sad world
It’s a going bad, getting sad, get yourself up off your arse
(Sad, sad) world
