    Story Behind the Song
I BEGAN WRITING THIS SONG AS A TRIBUTE TO MY FRIEND CHIEF IRON HORSE BIG MOUNTAIN, BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY. HE WAS VERY PROUD OF IT....
THE STORY JUST CAME TO ME AS I WROTE, PROBABLY FROM SOME ANCESTRAL MEMORY. IT'S
SYMBOLIC, AND I THINK THE MEANINGS ARE EASILY
    FIGURED OUT.

    Lyrics
    RACE THE IRON HORSE

THE DESERT SAND WAS SHIMMERING IN THE BLAZING MORNING SUN..
WITH PAINT AND FEATHERS WELL APPLIED AND CEREMONIES DONE,
HIS TOKENS AND HIS MEDICINE SURROUNDING HIM WITH FORCE,
RED EAGLE TOOK THE CHALLENGE THEN..TO RACE THE IRON HORSE..

RED EAGLE WATCHED TOWARDS THE EAST AND SAW THE BLACK SMOKE RISE..
FEAR WAS FIGHTING WITH EXHILARATION IN HIS EYES..
HE FELT THE ROLLING THUNDER AND HE HEARD THE MONSTER SCREAM..
COMING EVER CLOSER, CHEWING ROCKS AND SPITTING STEAM...

    (CHORUS)
YOU'RE NOT A MAN UNTIL YOU GO
    AND RACE THE IRON HORSE..
YOU CANNOT WIN AND STILL YOU GO
    AND RACE THE IRON HORSE..
THOUGH IT MAY EVEN KILL YOU, GO
    AND RACE THE IRON HORSE...

RED EAGLE AND HIS PONY WERE AMAZING TO BEHOLD..
SO FAST THEY NEVER LEFT A HOOFPRINT, SO THE STORY'S TOLD...
THEY PUSHED AHEAD AND MADE A MIGHTY LEAP TO CROSS THE TRACK..
THE ENGINEER JUST HID HIS FACE THEN LEANED OUT TO LOOK BACK..

HE NEVER FELT THE SMALLEST JOLT..NO NOT A SINGLE THUD..
AND WHEN HE REACHED THE STATION HE FOUND NOT ONE DROP OF BLOOD..
HE NEVER SAW THEM RIDING OFF OR LAYING ON THE SIDE..
IT HAPPENED EVERY YEAR ON THIS SAME DAY, ON THIS SAME RIDE..

    (RPT. CHORUS)
