Story Behind the Song
This song was written after I met a beautiful woman in Detroit. I was only there for one night then had to leave. I was playing the progression while we were talking on the phone later on and she mentioned getting a Chinese coin for luck. So I decided I needed one myself, put that in for the first line and the story followed. One of the best compliments I've ever received was from the fiddle player smiling as he said, "It sure ain't Garth Brooks" at the recording session.
It's the last song on my CD and has the trailer of Just That Kind of Guy added on using just one vocal and a mellotron.
Lyrics
Detroit Woman Blues
Think I’m going to find me a Chinese coin,
Put it in my pocket for luck,
Grab my prose, my guitar and my clothes
And head North in my pick-up truck,
‘Cause it’s ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
Until we all die we do what we must,
Think I’m going to find me a Chinese coin,
Put it in my pocket for luck.
Wintertime’s coming, Honey, I don’t care,
There’s a woman I’m wanting to see,
She always kept me warm through the cold winter nights,
And she says she’ll never marry me,
Well, she says she doesn’t love me, she swears she doesn’t care,
But she says it while she’s shucking off her underwear,
Wintertime’s coming, Honey, I don’t care,
There’s a woman I’m wanting to see.
Detroit City, here I come,
You better be ready for me,
‘Cause when I pass your city limit sign
I’ll be as happy as a man can be.
Dig my grave with a new silver spade,
If they catch me they’ll kill me, I know,
I was a poor boy stranded on a Southern chain gang,
And the sheriff wouldn’t let me go,
So when the jailer went to sleep I lifted the key,
And my Detroit woman, she’s waiting for me,
Dig my grave with a new silver spade,
If they catch me they’ll kill me I know.
