Story Behind the Song
I got the idea for this song when playing at a funeral. An old man should sing a song called "Home in Heaven," and he sang, and cried bitterly. When the sermony was over, this old man did not hide his tears, but clung tight to me and just cried. It was the only time I've ever seen the man.
I guess he too is dead by now.
Lyrics
Hello old man your friend has died
She was so old, her skin is cold
She's left this hard and bitter world
She was alive, her skin was soft
She was alone, you were her friend
Now she is dead
She rests her head on pillows
In her coffin
Hello old man, what can you do
Her spirit's off into the blue
You cannot see her anymore
Now please old man, let's honour her
So her kids can have something nice
To think about when she is laid in earth
In her coffin
You'll sing a song, I'll play along
We'll do a thing that means something
Yes we can make this parting seem
Like sleep at night, like lillies white
Like night that comes with promise of
A new day when she'll rise
From her coffin
And the man he sings
He sings I know a place where nothing will Be evil, bad and horrible
I know my God will wait for me
I know that he will quench my thirst
I know that he will let me rest
In green fields, yes I know he will
He'll let me meet my friend again
And the man he cries
'Cause he knows that she is dead and gone
He knows that now he'll be the one
To wait for death to come and take
His spirit to another place
He knows that in mysterious ways
They'll live together endless days
Illuminated by our God
But now she's dead, and in the mud
She lies and is surrounded
By her coffin
Hello old man, you must go on
You must remember, be the one
To keep her memory with us now
Her memory will not die with her
And even if we will forget
Our God he will take good care of her soul
Home in Heaven
