Short and bittersweet, the way I remember my time with you.

    Story Behind the Song
When you leave a message on someone's machine, do you ever end up saying something entirely different than you had planned when you called? I do.

"After The Beep" was written in fall 2001 in Washington, D.C. It's about the pain of love lost, and the lingering hope for love's redemption. One of my few songs NOT based on any specific real-life situation - that I'll talk about, at least.

    Lyrics
    i'm
    going to keep this short
    and bittersweet
the way i remember my time with you

    when i
wore my heart out on my sleeve
but all it ever got for me
    was this broken arm

    i think it was fall
    when it all fell apart
i'll never forget when you turned
    you turned like the leaves
    away from me

    and i
won't make the same mistake twice
though i've made it throughout my life
now i'm someone else, someone cold

    next time
    i'm gonna be lying
    and two-timing
cuz honesty isn't good enough for you

    i think it was fall
    when it all fell apart
but now it's spring, and i've turned
    i've turned a new leaf

i've seen that jon favreau movie
    a thousand times
but i won't let it be the story of my life

your picture still hangs on my wall
and if you ever want a chance
    to turn back the clock
    just call.
