Story Behind the Song
Interestingly enough, the song was inspired by the movie "Almost Famous". I liked the idea of reminiscing about a love long lost, set in the 60's. My hippy chick is an artist, not a pseudo groupie like Penny Lane though. It talks from her lover's perspective. He is looking back at how he led her on, took her for granted - in a true sense - ruined her life by abandoning her, realizing now how much he truly loved (loves) her.
Her name is Andolene - thought it had a nice ring to it. The sad part of the story is that she's alive (instituationalized) and he's a ghost whose punishment is having to relive all the pain he's caused her each moment of his eternity. Ooooh - very cosmic huh? The story takes place in the now.
No. Andolene is not a real person but she is a composite of many women I've known in my life. None of which are instituationalized that I know of though. I'm not that much of a cad!
Lyrics
Sits beside the window, sketching pad in hand
Draws from all her memories - she's an artist, I'm her fan
And Antoine lights her cigarette, while Chester pours her wine
The boulevard paints twilight, as the stars begin to shine
So Andolene will you dance with me
Under this Parisian moon
We'll drown away into yesterday and let love take us over...
Andolene, my Andolene
Andolene, what about me?
We walked into the desert, kissed by Sonoran winds
Made love below the canyon, watching lightening play off the rim
Now Antoine brings her crayons and Chester hands her pills
The radio's on, some old Beatle song
And the room begins to fill
So Andolene will you dance again
Could you love a boy like me?
For all those Romeos and Juliettes
We won't stop when the play is over...
Andolene, my Andolene
Andolene, what about me?
Andolene - cutting pictures from a magazine
Peasant dress with your hair such a mess
Like an angel that I've never seen
I never knew that you burned with such a fire
And I never knew you'd be consumed by the flame
Andolene, Andolene - with every beat of my heart
Andolene, Andolene - now let the ghost play his part...
Andolene, my Woodstock beauty queen
My forever girl in tiarra curls playing out your final scene
Andolene, my Andolene
Andolene, what about me?
And my Andolene...
