Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by a couple granola girls I've known who are always whining about some environmental crisis.
Lyrics
Well the ozone's fine and the whales have been saved
and I think you'll find that this place is okay,
the crime rate's down this year.
And the spotted owl can sleep tonight
cause his habitat is doin' alright
and the baby seals won't feel a thing.
But if you've gotta have something to save,
it's your legs- they need to be shaved.
And the birkenstocks and the dreadlocks have got to go
but you can still hug a tree for me.
Na nana na na nana, there's not enough trees to hug.
Na nana na na nana, there's not enough forests to love.
Some people are hard to please,
they're only happy doing one thing-
when they're out there hugging trees.
Radioactive leakage from the plant at Chernobyl,
depletion of our ozone layer from chlorofluorocarbons
and a warming that's global.
These things happen sometimes, they're called mistakes.
Errors are just something that occasionally everybody makes.
[CHORUS]
And if we weren't supposed to burn them then why are they made of wood?
And if we weren't supposed to chop them down, why is it that a saw works so good?
I'm just pointing out the facts, we wouldn't have cabins and railroad tracks.
I'm just pointing out the facts, we wouldn't have paper and lumberjacks.
You know I'm just pointing out the facts, that I wouldn't be playing this axe,
if it weren't for the lumber once it's dead- can't you just hug a log instead?
Na nana na na nana, there's not enough trees to hug.
Na nana na na nana, there's not enough forests to love.
Some people are hard to please,
they're only happy doing one thing-
and you know they're happy.
They're WAAAY too happy
and they never hug me.
Why would they? When they could be out there hugging. . .
Trees.
