Story Behind the Song
Motivation and inspiration came in one of Dave's late night songwriting binges. It was taken to the next jam, and for the most part, the rest of the band liked it. From there we stripped down the verses guitar-wise, and replaced the pre-chorus to what it is now. Lyrically, it deals with addiction, and its perception/role of both savior and destroyer.
Lyrics
...Here comes the Magic Man...
...Here comes the Magic Man...
...Here comes the Magic Man...
...Here comes the Magic Man...
I was on my knees waiting for the end
To take away these tears of sorrow.
Came the Magic Man, and I took his hand
And I knew I would never let go.
Drifting through the days,
Now I count the ways
To pass the time and drown my reason.
Now I know his plan and I understand
A little more the price of freedom.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
Here comes the Magic Man...
Coming for you with his cocaine hand.
Finds you alive or dead
And he's gonna grind your bones
To make his bread.
Conscious now and then...
I can't remember when I ever felt so empty inside.
But the Magic Man, he doesn't give a damn
If you live or if you die.
Living every day just to numb the pain...
Another hit to sleep tonight.
One to make our dreams,
One to make us real,
And the last one to say goodbye.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
I know, I know, I know I don't need it.
