This is pretty much a straight ahead modern rock song featuring an electric guitar solo by Laird Townsend. Along with Roma, this is one of the best songs that I've written. |
Credits: written, produced, recorded, mixed by Josh Arthur. All instruments played by Josh Arthur except guitar solo by Laird Townsend, and guitar solo auxiliary by Sam Arthur. BGV's: Laura Wright and Josh Arthur. |
Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in response to a 300 year old allegory called "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan. So if you haven't read the book (or listened to the book on tape like me), some of it might not make sense. If you have, you can feel smart because you should be able to get some of the literary allusions. Keep in mind though, this is just a response. It is only loosely based on the book.
Lyrics
Progress
Verse: C#m G# A E (F#m after each fourth line)
So now I’ve walked across these stones
Years have passed, now I’m old and so worn
So many bruises on these hands
So many times my flesh has felt these thorns
But I’ve learned how to survive
To love this narrow road of life that I’m on
I’ve entered through the wicket gate
I fear the war, but know the battle’s been won
Chorus: E A F#m B (end on F#m)
I’ve waited all my life for this
Climbing up and out of the abyss
To see the sun against the sky
To live is you, to gain’s to die
Verse:
There were some times when I was lost
Maybe this road was the mistake of my life
I needed you to point me home
When I was blind, you uncovered my eyes
Bridge: F#m E B
F#m E B
F#m A B
Right now I’m breaking free
I know I’m breaking free
Solo: A C#m F#m A B
Outro: F#m A
F#m A B
To gain’s to die
To gain’s to die
I’m coming home. . .
