Story Behind the Song
I had a friend named Jane in Commerce, Texas. I wrote this song about growing up and leaving behind negative influences while still having an appreciation for what the experiences taught me. The correlation with a Dear John letter comes from my dad's years in The Marine Corps.
Lyrics
Dear Jane,
Dear Jane,
Everybody's gettin' high.
But all I see are grey skies.
And if I didn't know you any better than I do,
I'd say you're leading me on.
Dear Jane,
Dear Jane,
Everybody's gettin' by.
But all I see are grey skies.
And if I didn't know life any better than I do,
I'd say it's putting me on.
And when I'm feeling all burned out,
And I don't know what my name is...,
Won't you let me come in.
And when I'm feeling all alone,
And I've got no place to go...,
Won't you let me come in.
And smoke awhile.
