    Story Behind the Song
When Kathy and I decided to move out to Boulder we bought a big van from a defunct rock group. Rather than drive around with all our furniture, when we got there we bought a yellow station wagon with a green door and an 8-track player with a Blood, Sweat and Tears tape stuck in it.

Musicians: Dar Williams, Megan Biolchini and Meredith Biolchini-vocals, Kevin Lynch-mandolin, Matt Nozzolio-dobro, Richard Downs-bass

    Lyrics
    Old Yellow Datsun
    © 1997 Peter H. Lehndorff (BMI)

The government says we're in a whole lotta trouble
Cuz we won't buy a new car.
    Everybody is out of work.
Cuz we won't buy a new car.

Chorus: They can't sell their Oldsmobiles.
    They can't sell their Fords.
We all drive an old yellow Datsun
    With one green door.
We all drive an old yellow Datsun
    With one green door.

    Well, hummin' through the mountains
    We'll be there soon,
    The radio's broke
    So we're singing this tune.
We just got a smile from the Man on the Moon
And we know he's going with us.
And we know he's going with us.
    Chorus:

Fill it with gas. Fill it with oil.
Check the water we're ready to roll.
It's got no buzzers. No flashing lights.
Just lets you know when it feels all right.
One side looks like an old tin can
And the hood's held down with rubber bands
I tell it my problems and it understands,
As we roll along the highway.
As we roll along the highway.
    Chorus:

Well it's got no air conditioning,
    The windows open fine.
The wipers wipe. And the blinkers blink.
And the heater heats most of the time.
We've been down to Santa Fe,
    We've been up to Cheyenne.
Well, It gets us where we need to go
And it brings us home again.
And it brings us home again.

Chorus: They can't sell their Oldsmobiles.
    They can't sell their Fords.
We all drive an old yellow Datsun
    With one green door.
We all drive an old yellow Datsun
    With one green door.

    Well, hummin' through the mountains
    We'll be there soon,
    The radio's broke
    So we're singing this tune.
We just got a smile from the Man on the Moon
And we know he’s going with us.
And we know he’s going with us.
