Story Behind the Song
ELLIE LAWSON
Talented female solo artists. Where are they when you need them? Manufactured pop aside, it certainly seems like a while since anyone has managed to give the UK scene at large a good old shake up.
It's certainly due for one with the arrival of Ellie Lawson -- singer, songwriter, apple cart kicker. While the industry has been resting on its laurels, it seems that the underground has been simmering with excitement at the emergence of this young self-styled songstress.
Ellie has steadily gained attention and much respect over recent years, concocting her delicious blend of laid back infectious melodies and eccentric statement with an uncompromising hip-hop rawness. Her flair for weaving disarming vocals in and out of her feisty rap lyrics is astonishingly polished and uniquely refreshing.
Having performed in the various venues ascribed to the different London scenes, Ellie found herself jamming and recording with many noted producers and up-and-coming talents in the capital, picking and choosing elements from each genre. "I was pulled towards British hip-hop because it is constantly forming its own identity,” she notes. "Even 5, 10 years ago there were people who listened and adopted the New York rap scene in the U.K. Then there were others - like myself, Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead, Attica Blues, Roots Manuva, and Hectic, who were and still are establishing a different sound altogether."
Now a fixture in U.K. hip-hop circles, Ellie has participated in the Ghetto Grammar Workshop run by Ty and collaborated with DJ Pogo at intermittent performances with jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine's band. Over the last year, she has been co-writing and producing tracks with Emancipate/BMG's new rap signing - Mr. Hectic.
Most recently, after a year long hiatus, noted Wu-Tang producer Carlos Bess has returned to active duty, making sure to get in on the act! The current demo features three tracks produced by Carlos; "Get what's mine", "Friends", and "Running". A listen to these tracks immediately draws attention to the subject of Ellie's roots – moreover, what makes her tick? Born into a bohemian household in London, Ellie claims, “I have always been different or felt different. At school I hung out with the rebellious people. I was never in the crowd that performed the perfect songs or did the perfect dance routines. I would rather jam with the others in the music room at lunchtime. We'd improvise and make up songs instead of learning how to play covers; creating my own music has been my passion since then."
So it seems. However, as you would expect of one so shrewd, Ellie has several more strings to her bow. Apart from starting up and running an acoustic jam night in London ("one big unplugged-all singing all dancing party in a pub.... there was nothing else like it!"), she has studied film at Guildhall University, worked as a photographer and is currently involved in starting up a new hip-hop magazine.
But now comes Ellie's time in the spotlight. "I want to invent and re-invent while defining particular emotional moments through music", she affirms. "I am interested in reality and truth. I rap because this is an honest, non-contrived form of statement for me and this is the basis of the way I write."
It seems that if the lyrical flow doesn't get you the first time, then she'll draw you in with her sweet hooks and raw beats.
