Arma virumque cano, Troiae qui primus ab oris
Italiam fato profugus Lavinaque venit

multa quoque et bello passus, dum conderet urbem
inferretque deos Latio - genus unde Latinum
Albanique patres atque altae moenia Romae.
THE AENEID book I. 1-7
Publius Vergilius Maro
(October 15, 70 B .C.E. - September 21, 19 B.C.E)
Translation
I am singing of arms and a man , a fated fugitive who first came from the Trojan shores
to Italy and the Lavinian people.
Thown about much on land and sea
by the violence of Heaven, on account of
savage Juno's wrath; He suffered also much in war
while establishing the city and bearing his divinites
to Latium; from which source (came) the Latin people,
Alba's fathers and the high walls of Rome.
