Story Behind the Song
This song has changed so much since it was written. It is about a woman who was abused by a male authority figure in her life, and finally found the strength to run away from it. When I play it live the lyrics are slightly different, but only to change the person speaking in places. I am hoping to rerecord it later this month with my new band. This is a topic of great concern to me, and there are a number of organizations that offer information, such as NOW (ww.now.org) and the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence (www.cpsdv.org).
Lyrics
“Boxer (Making Excuses)”
Well I could lay you out all right.
Prove my worth as a man,
Silent but for the blood on my knuckles.
And as long as I’m making excuses,
I’m not in a ring and forced to fight.
I just moved in and stepped on everybody else.
I’m a product of my environment.
There was a reason that I left,
And it was so convincing.
I still hear your footsteps on the stairs.
My melancholy stroke look face,
As you said those things you say,
Was like it just witnessed a knockout.
You think we’re all the same.
But as soon as you’re gone,
I don’t feel any need to fight.
There’s no more of those strange silences at night.
And with some distance and some time,
My mind can be mine again, but till then,
I’m a product of my environment.
Well thanks for being so concerned.
That fire was lit and now has burned.
The ashes just get stirred sometimes.
I’m not a boxer in a cage,
No need to bleed or break bones away,
Just don’t wonder why I treat you bad.
