Story Behind the Song
I was picking out the Porgy and Bess song, 'Summertime' and started making up a similar tune with the same feel. I came up with the final tune and most of the lyrics in the shower over the next few weeks, jotting them down after I got out. Only much later did I figure out the chords, and later still did I come up with the final order of verses, and added a few more.
It's not a traditional form with clear verses, bridges, etc., and I'm pleased with the way it flows.
I was at the end of a long relationship, and the words express some of the darker feelings I was having at the time.
Lyrics
Hey, Baby, Hey
Words and Music by Matt Slaybaugh
Hey, baby, hey.
Don't you look at me that way.
Take a walk, turn away now, say my name.
Cry, baby, cry.
Tell me what's on the other side.
Tell me what's all the yelling for now, now that we're just gonna be friends.
You may say, 'it's okay', that you think we're better off that way.
Take a seat, look at me now, say my name.
Hey, baby, hey.
Don't you look at me that way.
Don't you tell me 'bout the man you used to know.
Can't you see it's only me.
Can't you hear them sing our song.
Don't you know just where to point, at who was right, and what went wrong?
Tell me why should I cry, when it don't mean a goddam thing.
Take a walk, turn away now, say my name.
Love, baby, love.
Is that all you're thinking of.
You think I should cry, but don't say why, just look at me with wet eyes.
Cry, baby, cry.
Tell me what's on the other side.
Tell me how it feels, and what you steal, now that you're on your own.
Tell me how is it now, when it doesn't matter what I say.
