Story Behind the Song
This song is for the Blue Ridge Mountains.
For 4 years at Lynchburg College I swore I
was going to write a song about them, but it
didn't come until after I graduated. I can't wait to sing this song down in Lynchburg Virginia. I love it, because this song keeps getting stuck in my head, and I love to rock it out on stage. The last verse is a choral arrangement of the folk song Shennandoah (probably my favorite song of all time).
Lyrics
South Bound highway 29 I was looking for a piece of my heart. I made my way past charlottesville to where the freeways rarely venture. I was living in the heart of the bible belt, but I didn't find Jesus there. Just a few good books and a couple of songs and the landscape of heaven.
--Refrain--
Blue Ridge Mountains. I know I left my soul within your shennandoah valley and the rivers down below. Blue Ridge Mountains. I'd sing a thousand years just to be within your warm embrace again.
---
I spent four years in Lynchburg Virginia while my eyes gazed to the west. I'd look outside of that window pane in the back of a classroom. I was looking for a place I could hide my heart. I was looking for a place to view the world, and there upon that hungry mountain I placed my heart.
(refrain)
--bridge--
And there upon sharptop mountain. I looked east and I looked west, and there within the breadth of heaven I could finally touch the stars. And there upon sharptop mountain, I looked up and I looked down. I knew I was in the arms of angels as I exhaled an magical cloud.
-----
I stepped down from the podium with a piece of paper in my hand. I got into my loaded car, and made my way back north. I was looking for the next chapter in my life. I was looking to turn the page. But there upon sharptop mountain, I swore part of me would never leave that place.
(refrain)
It's been far too long since last I seen you and hear your rolling river. I long to see your smiling valley, where we're bound away. Across the wide Missourri.
(refrain)
