#1 ON THE BLUES COVER SONG CHART (11/04/03) This George Gershwin classic is performed as a very sad, mourning blues. The intro section features the bluesy lamentations of the alto saxophone which gives way to an easy-going jazz groove as the familiar melody kicks-in. If you like the saxophone and the blues, then this song is for you! | MP3.com CD: Freshly Canned! - buy it!

Story Behind the Song
This song actually has a sad story attached to-it. As a child, my mother would sing this song all of the time, probably because it kept my brothers and I quiet. Sadly, she passed away recently and I felt compelled to record this song in her honor.
The bluesy lamentations you hear in the intro were unrehearsed and clearly reflected the deep sorrow I was experiencing. The intro gives way to the familiar melody, which by contrast, sounds almost happy. However, this effect is lost during the solo sections where things gets blue, once again.
This song ended-up sounding somewhat "raw" and unpolished in order to retain my emotional state at the time. Because of this, I debated whether I should include-it on mp3.com, as I felt it wasn't good-enough. I ended-up uploading the song anyway, and it has enjoyed great popularity in the "Blues cover-song" category. By some strange coincidence, it also made #1 on mothers day! (twilight zone theme here)
If you got the blues, then this tune will make you even more miserable. Enjoy!
