Story Behind the Song
This song was written during the Gulf War, but it is about any war. It's written from the perspective of a dead hero, who even though he risks betrayal by the government through involvement in ill-conceived military action, is still willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Lyrics
I'll die for your freedom. I've died for your pride. And I've died in vain, that's something I shouldn't be called to do.
It's all the same to me since I'm gone. But is it the same to you, to you?
Don't you think you owe me something, for what I'm willing to give. Don't you think you owe me more than putting my name on a wall. Putting my name on a wall. Making dead heroes. Making dead heroes of us all.
A billion dollars a day. Does it mean I'm bought and paid for, to be used and thrown away, away?
Remember my young face, remember eyes that won't see me again.
When you measure the cost, don't forget to count me. When you measure the cost, don't forget to count me. I'll be your dead hero.
