Story Behind the Song
Regent Street was where the Ho-Chi-Minhs lived during their junior year in college. We lived there with our friend Renate, and when she announced her wedding, we wrote this song as a gift to her.
Lyrics
In the year of 1999 smack dab in the month of May
A pretty girl named Renate saw a guy she knew named J
J was reading something, what it was she wanted to know
It was a list of classes from the school where he would go
Renee was also enrolled there by a simple twist of fate
J said he and his friend Mark where in need of a roommate
Renee had never seen this Mark and she barely knew J
But she threw caution to the wind and moved with them anyway
And they were glad (yes they were glad)
She seemed real nice (so very nice)
And they were glad (so very glad)
It saved them rent ('cause they were cheap)
They found a decent place to live: 1402 Regent Street
And moved there sweating heavy in the early September heat
The first night there Renee was scared by Mark's cinematic taste
"I didn't think it'd be that kind of film," Mark said in haste
And he felt weird (yeah he felt weird)
And then he blushed (boy was he red)
And he felt weird (he felt so weird)
He liked the film (Liv Tyler's hot)
Eddie was a jerk from 5th floor, he was a big self-centered fool
He tried to take Mark and J on and then they took him to school
Mark beat Eddie one time, and then J spanked him again
Then J and Renee annihilated both Eddie and his friend
Renee came home from dinner one night, she was blind to see
She'd been on a date with the guy Mark and J now called 'Plan B'
'Plan B' was just a friend, she said, Mark and J just stood and grinned
Mark ate all the leftovers paid for by her new boyfriend
And they were good (tastes oh so good)
He liked Chinese (Asian Land!)
And they were good (he ate too much)
But they weren't his (but they were free)
Eddie was a jerk from 5th floor, he was a big self-centered fool
he tried to take J on, and then J took him to school
With every question he was asked, stupid Eddie would have to pass
Even though he lost he ripped off his shirt and looked like a union jack-ass
And he was dumb (truly dumb)
And he dressed lame (nice T-shirt)
And he was dumb (here's a quiz:)
What's two plus three? (he doesn't know)
There was a smell that lingered there and put them all in a foul mood
They thought it was their neighbors cooking up some Indian food
Mark said "I don't think that stench is coming from next door..."
Then a week later the headlines read a kid died on 6th floor
Eddie was a jerk from 5th floor he was a big self-centered fool
Pam said to J "Aren't you the guy that took Eddie here to school?
"You beat Ed at ping-pong and Jeopardy, you're that same guy?"
J said "Yes I am," and then Eddie just wanted to cry
'Cause he was weak (he had no skills)
And he was sad (J made him cry)
And he was weak (not at all a man)
We hate his guts (don't we all?)
In their final month there they were handed a surprise
"J's 300 dollars short on rent!" Renee said with widened eyes
Then Ellie Wu impounded Mark's bicycle for no reason at all
They were glad to get out of there and move to the Saxony next fall
Regent Street
Regent Street
It was Regent Street
Regent Street
Regent Street
Regent Street
