Story Behind the Song
At times we all feel that we have come to the end of our rope. Waiting for the Angels is the story of a man whose life has moved him more than he has moved it. Now, as he awaits the next move, he is also just waiting for the end.
The song began as an excercise in rhyme, but the lyrics became a story and the melody came to reflect the desperation of the lyrics. Somewhat a projected autobiographic piece.
Lyrics
There's a guy I know, sittin' in a railway station waitin' for a train.
And he's feeling low, searchin' through his pockets for somethin' that will ease his pain.
Says it scares him so, he don't know why he does it, its just somethin' that he can't explain.
It won't let him go, try so hard to kick it but it grips just like cocaine.
Sittin' in the darkness just lookin' for a brighter day.
Waitin' for the angels come to carry him away.
He looks like Romeo, had a lotta women but for now he'll just abstain.
He says he's good to go, but worry weighs him down like a self-made ball and chain.
There's so much to know, and thoughts like runnin' water keep flowin' through his brain.
He calls it vertigo, spendin' all his time just tryin' not to go insane.
Sittin' in the darkness just lookin' for a brighter day.
Waitin' for the angels come to carry him away.
Says he has no home, home is where your hat is, still he knows he can't remain.
He's leavin' Tupelo, had enough of Dixie and he just can't stand the rain.
He's goin' to Buffalo, that's where life has pushed him but he says he can't complain.
A strange scenario, a man without a master who doesn't rule his own domain.
Sittin' in the darkness just lookin' for a brighter day.
Waitin' for the angels come to carry him away.
God, I'm feelin' low, I'm sittin' in a railway station waitin' for a train.
