Story Behind the Song
Sidney Bechet was the musical virtuoso that could be credited with introducing the soprano sax to the world. His second claim to fame is perhaps this song, "Petite Fleur" (Little Flower) along with "Summertime". Although originally performed on the soprano sax, it is equally suited to the clarinet. This ballad was originally written in 1934, but only became popular around 1959 when Bechet was dying of cancer.
I vividly remember hearing this song on the radio as my mother would turn-it all the way up whenever it played.
I can only hope that this performance of "Petite Fleur" meets Sidney Bechet's standards, as he was reportedly picky about such things. In fact, he once got into a gunfight over chord changes!
