Described as 'the best song Pavement never wrote'. John Kennedy's single of the week xfm. What the press said about Ivory Coast: 'FGR…adhering to one basic, yet sincere mission statement: "To put out good songs." It's working. 53MPH's unshakeable post-Brit pop harmonies on "Ivory Coast" have already been championed by XFM and applied to Sky Sports footie bulletins' Dazed and Confused '53mph delivers a particular brand of crisp, well-thought-out rock that draws equally on American and British influences…..the A-side sounds both like the Kinks and some sort of Pavement off shoot.' Record Collector 'The Singles Bar' September 2001 'You know when you hear something and it gets so stuck in your head its almost impossible not to hear it anymore? Well the a-side of this record is one of those songs. Sounding like the best Pavement song Pavement never recorded…' Strange Fruit www.strange-fruit.co.uk 'Its everything Blur tried and failed to achieve in their Pavement Phase' Josh Rinkoff Rocksbackpages.com

    Story Behind the Song
I wrote the lyrics on the roof of my flat in Tooting Broodway on a bright summers day... Its a mix of nonsense rhyme and popular phrases, with half recalled memories of a visit to San Francisco beach.
The instrumentation borrows alot from Sonic Youth and strangely enough a half remembered Alice Cooper chorus.

    Lyrics
Your like a ship in the night
Losing your load in the mire
But the Ivory Coast is dear
And the phantasms make it clear.

It doubles up on the floor
    Then doubles up some more
But the secular life is mean
Always making you wash and clean

But I never was what you told me to be
    Makes me feel high
And you never saw what I told you to see
    Makes me feel high

    But your bringing me faith
    Back to the human race
And your bringing it left and right
Underneath me and out of sight

    And your mating sound
Leaves me flat on the ground
But the angels are far to proud
To all fit on one golden cloud
    Causes tension with overcrowd
Causes other to laugh out loud.

But I never meant what you thought I had done
    Makes me feel high
And your ivory towers are blocking the sun
    Makes me feel high
And the fading light causes migraines to cloud
    Over my eyes.
Always the maid but never the bride.

    {Solo}

But I never was what you told me to be
    Makes me feel high
And you never saw what I told you to see
    Makes me just sigh
And I’ll meet you again at the point of view
    Where well get high
Leaving me proud but always refused.

Your by the edge of the sea
With Orson Wells on your knee
    Telling you about shutter speeds
    And the movement of Polynese

And the flight left at dawn
    With only two people on
But the Ivory Coast is clear
Of the peasants with home brewed beer
Its inundated with tramps and queens
Swapping postcards of the late James Dean
Whilst all the muscles make their bodies gleam
Out at sea there’s a hurricane
Always the maid but never the bride.
