Story Behind the Song
The lyrics to this song came to me late one night a few years ago. On the surface, the words seem like they come from a larger story, that you never get to hear all of.
On a deeper level, the song is a tribute to my favorite author, Piers Anthony, and a lot of the lyrics are sly references to his most famous fantasy, horror and science fiction novels. In particular, the words "Death", "Time", "Fate", "War", "Nature", "Evil" and "Good" refer to his ~Incarnations of Immortality~ series, which are my all-time favorite books.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Good evening to you all
Things are not what they seem
Painted life, tainted death
Wake up, it's time to dream
Pieces of fate, staring you down
The firefly has his way
Attempted war, pointless suicide
Mother nature turns to clay
Chorus
She hid from me on a distant moon
The evil in her soul spoke to me
From a far-off world
She had finally reached her goal
Verse 2
The gypsy and the unicorn
A multi-colored maze
Will they see the light of day?
In this critical phaze
Purple mist from atop the trees
Another sleepless night
I see the style of the game
And I lose the will to fight
Chorus
Break
Verse 3
Good evening to you all
The truth is in my eyes
Tainted life, painted death
Wake up, it's time to die
I see the mist from atop the trees
Another sleepless night
I see the stile of the game
And I lose the will to fight
Chorus
