Premiered April 18, 2002 - Southwest Texas State University Wind Ensemble. The Title DANSE MOODS, refers to the notion that moods can change very quickly and sometimes for no apparent reason. It is with this in mind that the piece uses different instances of dance-inspired setions. The first section opens with a chord motif complete with Spanish dance flourishes in the trumpets and horns. This motif is then followed by an almost cartoon-like theme inspired by quick and spastic moves. The third section introduces a sweeter and happier theme stretched over a 7/8, 5/8 meter. Watching a young girl dance for family inspired it. The dance was somewhat a "funny waltz," that at times stetched either an eighth note longer or shorter, ending up in the odd meters. The final section takes the quick opening theme and darkens the mood with a quasi-jazz feeling with a modern beat set underneath. Beginning with a flurry of exchanged notes between the trumpets and horns, the piece culminates with a modern day rock feel influenced by rhythms of modern dance music.
